An important point to know before renting a car or scooter is that Crete has no motorway. The main road that connects Chania to the rest of Crete is National Road 90 (also known as the North Road of Crete, VOAK, code: EO90), with two lanes (one in each direction). Apart from the highway being narrow and winding in many places, the two major problems are that there is no central reservation and no lighting on much of it. 

Understandably, riding a scooter, motorcycle, or ATV at night, especially at midnight, is not recommended on the national road.
